How is rhinoplasty different from septoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgery to change the shape of the nose. Because both breathing and the nose’s shape are interrelated, a rhinoplasty may sometimes be performed not only to change the way the nose looks but also to improve breathing through the nose. Septoplasty is a surgery to improve breathing by straightening the wall inside the nose that divides the nasal passages into a right and a left side (nasal septum). When the septum is crooked, it can make it harder to breathe through the nose. A septoplasty is often combined with a rhinoplasty.

Why do people get Rhinoplasty in Dubai?

Rhinoplasty For Aesthetic/cosmetic Reasons:

Correct the nose size (reduce or resize)

Straighten a crooked nose

Widen or narrow the nose width to correct proportion

Restructure nose tips

Rhinoplasty For Health Reasons:

Cure breathing issues (also called Septoplasty)

Treat nose damage from accidents (referred to as reconstructive Rhinoplasty).

The nose becomes proportionate to the rest of the facial features.

Improvement in facial symmetry.

Is rhinoplasty a simple operation?

No. Rhinoplasty is a challenging operation. This is due to several factors. First, the nose is a complicated 3D shape that is in the middle of the face. Changes made during rhinoplasty are often very small. But these changes can make a major difference in the way the nose looks and functions. Because these changes are small, so is the margin for error. Swelling and the placement of local anesthetic in the skin distort the nose during surgery, hiding many of the subtle changes made. Rhinoplasty also doesn’t have a standard plan or set order of steps. Dr. Sajjadi tailors each operation to the needs of the patient.

What Nose Conditions can be Corrected With Rhinoplasty Dubai?

Deviated Nasal Septum

Commonly referred to as DNS aims to correct bent deviated, non-aligned or twisted nose through rhinoplasty. If the nose deviates internally, then septoplasty, the internal nose walls are fixed, and the nasal passages and reconstructed.

Hump Reduction

If a patient has a humped nose, then the specialist rhinoplasty surgeon in Dubai probably performs hump reduction rhinoplasty aiming to resize and restructure the dorsal hump on the nose bridge.

Alar Reduction or Nostrils Reduction

In alar or nostrils reduction surgery, a thin skin flap is removed from the nose wing. Then, the alar base and nostrils are reshaped in symmetry, making them smaller and improving appearance.

Revision Rhinoplasty

If you are not satisfied with a previous rhinoplasty, then revision rhinoplasty is an option to restore the desired results. Several unsatisfied patients visit Dr Shahram for restorative revision rhinoplasty and leave happily.

Finesse Rhinoplasty

Finesse rhinoplasty involves manoeuvring tiny refinements and tuning of the nose for enhancing its appearance. The surgeon diligently drafts a surgical plan, and the patient in finesse rhinoplasty doesn’t go through the full rhinoplasty procedure, as this is a modulation of normal rhinoplasty.

Bulbous Nose

The bulbous nose appears expanded and bigger, ruining the facial appearance. The rhinoplasty for bulbous nose aims to refine the nose tip a conical and resize to a smaller tip. The surgeon uses the septorhinoplasty approach to address a bulbous nose.

Broad Nose

A broader nose can lower your self-confidence publicly. Most people with broad noses feel less confident because their nose looks bigger third centre of the face and does not suit facial appearance.

What are the Associated Risks of Revision Rhinoplasty?

Anesthesia: Depending on the type of anesthesia administered, patients may have a reaction. This is exceedingly rare, and it is important to discuss your personal risk with your anesthesiologist.

Infection: In rare circumstances patients may develop an infection following rhinoplasty procedures. These are usually managed with intraoperative and postoperative antibiotics.

Bleeding: Although rare, patients may have bleeding episodes following nasal surgery. Your surgeon will likely order blood work to make sure you are healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Your surgeon should also go over all medications and supplements that you take to minimizing bleeding risk.

Need for secondary and revision surgeries: Depending on the complexity of the surgery, sometimes multiple surgeries are required to ensure the best aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Scarring and Poor wound healing: Some patients with underlying medical conditions or more prone to poor wound healing and scarring. It is important to understand these risks prior to embarking on a treatment strategy.

Local Reactions: Sometimes you may experience local reactions to the ointments, sutures, taping material, and nasal packing used during surgery and postoperatively. This is rarely seen, but may occur. If you have any allergies to certain materials or adhesives you should discuss with your surgeon.

Changes in nasal sensation: Patients may experience altered sensations in their nose (pain or numbness). This is exceedingly rare, and if it occurs it is most often temporary.

Persistent, New, or Recurrent Nasal Airway Obstruction: Altering the nose may result in changes to breathing. Sometimes patients may develop new, persistent or recurrent airway problems. This is rare, but oftentimes is due to poor wound healing or scarring (see above). This may require secondary surgeries to optimize outcomes.

Continued need for medical therapies: If you have breathing complaints related to medical causes (e.g. allergies), then you may continue to require medical nasal therapies (e.g. nasal steroids and sprays).

Swelling: Swelling is a common part of the healing process. Sometimes this swelling may persist for a prolonged period of time.

Poor Aesthetic Outcome: Although the goal of rhinoplasty is to enhance the aesthetics of the nose, sometimes patients may have an unsatisfactory result. This may occur due to poor communication and understanding of the goals by the surgeon. Other times, it may be due to poor wound healing, scarring, and swelling (see above). It is important that you spend a significant amount of time with your surgeon in order to outline the exact goals and desires of surgery to minimize the chance of a poor outcome.

Nasal Septal Perforation: A hole in the septum may develop. Oftentimes these do not cause any problems. Other times however, they may cause crusting, bleeding, and breathing difficulties. These require secondary surgeries for repair.

Will I need to stay in the clinic?

Nearly everyone who has rhinoplasty is able to safely leave the hospital the same day after surgery. In rare cases, you may stay in the hospital for one night if you’re having a hard time with nausea or have other health problems that need to be monitored.

How long is the recovery period?

Plan to take a week off from work, school or other obligations. You will feel progressively better each day during the first week. One week after surgery, people usually feel like they are themselves again. After surgery, there will be some swelling. The swelling can take many months to resolve, although most people stop noticing it after a couple of months. People are usually back to performing most activities after a week and resuming all activities after two to four weeks.

Are there risks?

All surgeries have risks. Fortunately, rhinoplasty risks are small and complications are rare. Dr. Sajjadi will talk to you about the surgery’s risks and benefits in detail before the operation.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

Not for most people. One day after surgery, most people rate their pain between 0 and 4 out of 10.

Will you pack my nose?

No. Packing can be very uncomfortable. But you’ll likely have some soft splints in your nose. These splints have a hole in them to make it possible to breathe through them, at least for a few days. Dr. Sajjadi will easily remove these splints at the one-week visit.
