Botox® or Dyport® are the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world – and for very good reason. It’s safe, affordable and can do wonders for keeping the wrinkles at bay and helping you maintain a youthful complexion.

Use of these neuromodulators are booming, with many giving it a go than ever before. The fact is, people are curious about its wrinkle-reducing abilities, with celebrities on TV shows and increasing access, said to be some of the reasons behind the surge.

By far the most common use is as a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, to smooth wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming – known as preventative Botox®. The aim is to subtly lift key points using small amounts of Botox® to create a fresher appearance. All the muscles and structures of the face are linked, so you have to consider how they move together in order to create a natural look.

Botox® or Dyport®  are actually a trade name for Botulinum toxin, a neurotmodulator protein that temporarily paralyses muscles when injected. When Botulinum toxin is injected into a muscle underneath the skin surface, it relaxes the muscle causing the overlaying skin to appear smoother, making it a popular anti-wrinkle treatment in the cosmetics industry.

These Neuromodulators only works on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. These are known as dynamic wrinkles and are often called “expression lines.” The most common dynamic wrinkles that Botox® can treat are lines on the upper face, such as the “11” between the brows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes. These lines are caused by smiling, frowning, squinting, and other facial expressions. Botox® will not work on fine lines and wrinkles caused by sagging or loss of plumpness in the face. These are known as static wrinkles. Static wrinkles include lines in the cheeks, neck, and jowl areas. Botox® is not a permanent treatment. Repeated treatments are necessary for continued wrinkle-reducing effects.

The results of Botulinum toxin start appearing only a few hours after treatment, with the full effect setting in at around the three day mark. These neuromodulators are self limiting and normally lasts between 4 to 6 months and isn’t accumulative.

Everyone ages differently and everyone has unique cosmetic goals, which means there’s no definitive “best” time to start getting “Botox”. Many people start getting “Botox” in their late 20s and early 30s, which is when skin cell turnover and collagen production start to taper off and the signs of aging gradually become more visible.

For people in their 30s and 40s, Botox treatments can be effective for treating early wrinkles before they have a chance to set in. For people in their 50s and 60s, Botox can soften lines and help create a fresh, rejuvenated look.

Botox is not permanent. Results typically last for about three to six months depending on how your body responds and the area you wish to target. If you like the results, you might decide to have more treatments in the future.
